De lana

From a close mother-daughter relationship, a joint project was born: De Lana. A brand in our image: Belgian, family, timeless and conscious.

De Lana is slow fashion, unique quality pieces in natural materials and 100% handmade by Macarena and her daughter Camille.

  1. AROZ. Can you introduce yourself? Who are you? And what do you do for a living?

Macarena. My name is Macarena Toro. I am Chilean and a designer specialized in knitwear! I am the co-founder of the knitwear brand “de Lana”, and Camille’s mom.

Camille. My name is Camille De Vigne, I am Belgian-Chilean, and most importantly: Macarena’s daughter! I am in charge of development and communication of the brand we co-founded, “de Lana”.

  • AROZ.  Can you introduce us to your brand?

M&C. We make pieces on demand (sometimes made-to-measure), always handmade and with 100% natural materials. The concept: choose a design and pick a colour to make an almost unique piece! The idea was to offer an alternative to today’s way of consuming (on demand), by putting craftsmanship, the know-how and quality of the material at the core of the creation process.

  • AROZ.  Where do you find your inspiration?

M&C. We find inspiration in our everyday life, nourished by many kinds of readings, exhibitions, movies and series! What we love, above all, is adapting vintage designs and bringing them up to date with soft and natural materials. It is the magic of knitwear: we begin with an idea and a simple thread and end up as a finished piece that will be chosen and worn.

  • AROZ.  What are the positive aspects of working with family?

M&C. We spend time together! A new form of complicity emerged between us. We learnt to know different facets of each other we wouldn’t have known in a classic mother-daughter relationship.

We obviously need some adjustments from time to time to listen and understand each other. Actually, working together is like knitting, we bond, sometimes there are knots, sometimes we have to start again, but we always find an agreement to look in the same direction.

  • AROZ.  What does jewelry represent for you, in general?

M&C. We love jewellery, both of us! They represent memories, symbols of love or friendship. They are also, in a way, objects that connect us to moments and people…

"Actually, working together is like working with knitting: you weave links and sometimes there are knots. Sometimes you have to start again, but we always manage to find an agreement to look in the same direction."

  • AROZ.  What are the pieces of jewelry you never leave?

Macarena. My engagement ring, my wedding ring, and a Shakira bracelet, a piece of Mapuche jewellery that connects me to my home country, Chile!

Camille. My engagement ring, and I always play around with jewels I received on birthdays from my family, my friends, or my significant other!

  • AROZ.  What's your favorite Aroz Jewelry piece? And with which De Lana piece would you associate it?

Macarena. Though question! The John ring for its rough side, which I would pair with Puchuncavi, our sleeveless jumper.

Camille. I love mixing different pendants on a necklace. So, from Aroz I would choose : the Joa pendant, because that’s my mum’s nickname for us: “Chinita”, which means ladybird in Spanish. Then, Mini Astro scorpio for our common zodiac sign. And finally, the Pepa pendant, a little chili pepper, in reference to Chile. I would pair those with Ranco, our cardigan with balloon sleeves.

  • AROZ.  What is your mantra? What word/sentence would you engrave on one of our medallions?

M&C. We have the same: “Sin lluvia, no hay flores”. Which means “No rain, no flowers” in Spanish.

  • AROZ. Finally, how would you define Aroz Jewelry in 3 words?

Macarena. I would say: creativity, symbolic and delicate.

Camille. For me it’s solar, family and craftsmanship.
