LAYLA by lawa

Aroz Stories presents Layla, the creator of BY LAWA, a brand of woven bags made in Thailand. Dive into the world of this talented artist and let yourself be inspired by her journey.

AROZ.  Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

Layla. Hello! I’m Layla, 27 years old, of Belgian and Burmese descent. After spending 20 years in Asia, 17 of which were in Bangkok, I’ve been living in Brussels for 7 years. I’ve always had a deep love for my Asian culture, especially the food, art, and lifestyle. Although I was terrified after experiencing my first winter ever (and not just any winter… the one in Brussels!), I’ve settled in well. I live with my partner and our two cats, and here I am still.

AROZ.  Tell us the story of BY LAWA

L. By chance! After a vacation at my parents' place in Thailand in February 2022, I brought back some bags for a few friends in Brussels. Initially, there was no thought or specific project behind it. The feedback I received was so positive and enthusiastic that I decided to turn this experience into something more concrete. That’s how BY LAWA was born! (*Lawa is the nickname my childhood friends gave me.)

AROZ. Where does your inspiration come from?

L. My inspiration comes from my desire to live every day as if I were on vacation in Thailand. I aspire to a sunny and serene life, something I want to hold onto throughout the Belgian winters.

AROZ. What's your favorite piece in your wardrobe?

L. A kimono passed down from my mother. It’s a comfortable and elegant piece. I prioritize comfort while still maintaining a touch of style.

AROZ. What is your biggest wish for BY LAWA?

L. Even though BY LAWA is a small side project, I love dedicating my time to it. It’s a joy to think of new ideas for designs and colors every time I return to Bangkok. I also love meeting the people who carry the bags, participating in projects like this one, and pop-ups.

My biggest wish for BY LAWA is to keep going while preserving this personal and fun dimension. This project is a bridge between Bangkok and Brussels, my two "homes." Ultimately, what matters most to me is that the bags continue to bring joy and color into people’s lives while reflecting my journey and passions.

AROZ. What is your greatest achievement?

L. After studying at an art school and working for nearly five years in the creative field, I’m starting an MBA in September. It’s a completely new challenge and very different from what I know. It might also be the starting point for many exciting creative projects in the future!

AROZ. What’s your biggest failure?

L. Haha, I’ve had MANY failures! Moving alone at 18 to a new culture, with very few close people around, taught me a lot of life lessons, but it also brought so many strong moments, encounters, and projects I’m proud of.

AROZ. A fun fact about you?

L. I played the double bass in my high school jazz band. My parents were thrilled to have such a discreet instrument…

AROZ. What does jewelry mean to you in general?

L. For me, jewelry is a way to express personality and emotions. Each piece tells a story, carries particular meaning, often tied to a memory or belief. In Asia, it often serves as a good luck charm, offering a sense of protection or fortune.

AROZ. What’s your favorite piece at AROZ?

L. I’m a fan of the new Salinas rings! I particularly love jewelry with stones, as they bring a unique depth and elegance to each creation.

AROZ. What’s your mantra? The phrase or word you’d like to engrave on one of our medallions?

L. "I’m growing and improving every moment." I try to adopt a compassionate attitude towards myself because we are often too demanding and critical. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, I prefer to question what’s happening inside me. This curious perspective helps me get through difficult times.

AROZ. Finally, can you define AROZ in 3 words?

L. Sun, passion, and bonita ^^

The BYLAWA bags will be exclusively available in our store throughout the month of September.
